Black dogs are, and have been, quite a regular occurence in mythology - primarily in the British Isles. Usually reported as being a nocturnal apparition, larger than a normal dog with large glowing eyes, they are often associated with ancient pathways, highways, crossroads and are commonly linked to places where deaths have occured.
Black dogs are called several different things including, Shuck, Devil Dog, Hell-hound, Grim, Gytrash, Earth Hounds and Barrow Hounds. This page serves as a reference to reports of them over time, with links back to the main blog posts.
